Néstor Kirchner dispensed with protocol and was barely cordial to the Bush Administration and his close ally in Latin America, Colombia's Alvaro Uribe. His off-hand relations with Uribe were puzzling given that Argentina is one of Colombia's largest foreign direct investors.
Mending fences with the US over the close relationship formed by Kirchner with Chávez can only help. To do this Fernández does not have to bow to the US, but she needs to understand the US has legitimate interests in South America, as does Argentina.
Conclusion
Fernández's election does not mean the establishment of alternate presidencies in Argentina - Fernández-Kirchner, Kirchner-Fernández, and so on. The fragmented opposition of today has four years to regroup and form a united front against the Justicialistas.
The only way Fernández can facilitate a transition back to Kirchner is if she can handle the economic, labor, energy, and foreign policy challenges in a way that most Argentines would approve of four years from now, and if the world economy continues to demand Argentina's exports at today's levels, or more.
Nothing is written in stone in Latin America, least of all the success of Fernández's presidency in Argentina.
